Andrews papers include officer's correspondence including two April 1861 letters describing his reaction to outbreak of war and carrying dispatches from Massachusetts governor to Washington; letters from January-October 1862 describing Army life, attitudes to the war, advancement efforts, relations with fellow officers, and service in Maryland and Virginia; and 1865 business letter.

George Andrews was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, son of Manasseh and Harriet Leonard Andrews. In 1851, Andrews graduated first in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating, he was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of brevet second lieutenant. From 1851 to 1854, he served as assistant to Lt. Col.
